Tears Of The Girrafe...

imgres.jpgWell, if you 're looking for an interesting, exiting, action packed and touching book...then look no further!!! Tears Of The Giraffe is the second book of the no. 1 Ladies Detective agency, and with main character Precious Ramotswe on hand as soon as you turn the page, you are guaranteed to enjoy it. It is written by Alexander McCall Smith and in short, the book tells the story of Mma Ramotswe's Ladies detective agency and the way she finds the answers to the many diverse cases. It also documents her private life, and how it links up to her work. It also talks of her engagement to J.L.B. Matekoni, owner of Tlokweng road Speedy Motors. It is set in Botswana, in Southern Africa, and the sense of family they have in their country seeps through in the book. The book also is trying to get the message across that the world is changing, as it is in Botswana and that we must preserve as much of our heritage as we can.

The plot of Tears Of The Giraffe is a cleverly woven tapestry, the different threads each being another mini saga in themselves, which when come together form an intricate picture. These mini sagas are her cases, which consist of things as easy to solve as a case of a cheating wife, or as enticing and gripping as one about a decade old disappearance in the Kalahari Desert.

The book also tells the story of Mma Makutsi, graduate of Botswana secretary school (with 97% as she likes to point out!) and her eagerness for the promotion of assistant detective. Another sudden surprise for Mma Roamotswe is the increase of her Family by not one, but two more mouths to feed, but I will let you read the rest yourself!

The book has an eminent sense of culture, and the author creates this through his amazing gift to paint vivid landscapes through his fantastic use of imagery. You can put yourself in Precious’ shoes, standing there on her veranda in Zebra Drive. You can feel her love for her homeland and taste her redbush tea. You remember Obed Ramotswe, her loving daddy, and all he had done for her, then try and solve the mysteries of her own life and others. All these feelings are perfectly conveyed in this wondrous book, which encapsulates the mind and leaves you wanting MORE!!!

“a rare pleasure” these 3 words written by the Daily telegraph seem to perfectly sum up Tears Of The Giraffe and I hope that like I did, you are inspired to read the book, and possibly the other 8 in the series!
